This programme is developed by the Hungarian National Pharmaceutical Care Committee and supported by EuroPharm Forum. The Metabolic Syndrome working group will use this national programme as a template for a more general European programme, see working plan below.

Background

The EuroPharm Forum has developed many disease specific pharmaceutical care programs (like diabetes, hypertension) which are related to the cardiovascular disease field. In the 21st century, when 50% of all mortality causes are due to cardiovascular diseases (source: The European Health Report 2009), it is vital to have an integrated approach. The Metabolic Syndrome Protocol reflects to this need, because it incorporates the obesity, diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidaemia field, in a three prevention (health promotion, screening, follow up of diagnosed patient) level approach. The protocol was developed by the Hungarian National Committee of Pharmaceutical Care in joint collaboration with EuroPharm Forum.

The aim of the project

1. To develop the European version of the Metabolic Syndrome protocol, which gives an easy to use tool for every country to implement the protocol in their own country
2. To collect all the relevant information on European level, which can help the pharmacy profession
1. to underlay the importance of pharmacists involvement in the cardiovascular disease management
2. to prove the effectiveness of pharmacist interventions in this field
